Interlock® Metal Roofing — FAQ

  • What is Interlock® Metal Roofing?

Interlock® Metal Roofing is a lifetime aluminum roofing system made from heavy-gauge interlocking shingles or mechanical-lock panels. Each piece locks on all sides to form a sealed, wind-resistant roof. Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Ltd. is the exclusive installer for Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

  • What are Interlock® shingles made of?

Interlock® shingles are made from heavy-gauge aluminum. Aluminum is non-ferrous, so it will not rust, which is ideal for Oregon rain and coastal salt air. Solid copper is also available in select profiles.

  • What Interlock® roof styles are available?

Interlock® offers Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, and Mechanical-Lock Standing Seam. You get classic architecture with lifetime aluminum protection.

  • What makes Interlock® different from other metal roofing brands?

Interlock® uses a true 4-way interlocking system, not simple overlap panels. This improves wind uplift resistance and blocks water back-tracking. Interlock also uses the Alunar® coating system for long-term color and UV stability.

  • Is Interlock® a manufacturer or an installation service in Alaska?

Interlock Roofing Ltd. manufactures Interlock® systems, while Interlock Industries (Alaska) Inc. is the exclusive certified installer in Alaska.

  • Is Interlock® only for residential homes?

No. Interlock® is used primarily on homes, but it also performs well on light-commercial roofs. We install Interlock on residential (~80%) and commercial (~20%) projects across Anchorage.

  • How long does Interlock® Metal Roofing last?

Interlock® is engineered to last for decades and typically outlives asphalt roofs by multiple replacement cycles. The aluminum base metal won’t rot or rust in Alaska's wet climate.

  • What warranty comes with Interlock®?

Interlock® systems include a long Lifetime Limited Warranty, often structured as a 50-year transferable warranty. It’s designed to support “Never Re-Roof Again®” ownership.

  • Is the Interlock® warranty transferable?

Yes. Interlock® warranties are transferable to a new homeowner, adding resale leverage and buyer confidence.

  • What does “Lifetime Roof” mean with Interlock®?

It means the roof is designed so you don’t go through 15–25-year replacement cycles. Interlock® aluminum keeps performing for decades with minimal maintenance.

  • Will Interlock® ever rust in Alaska's rain?

No. Interlock® aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. This makes it ideal for Anchorage.

  • Is Interlock® a good roof for Cook Inlet?

Yes. Aluminum resists corrosion in salty air, and Interlock’s sealed interlocks block wind-driven rain. It’s built for coastal gusts and moisture.

  • Does Interlock® resist moss in Alaska?

Yes. Interlock® is inorganic aluminum with a sealed coating, so moss can’t feed on or penetrate the surface like it can with asphalt or cedar.

  • Is Interlock® good for heavy rain?

Yes. Interlock® shingles lock on all sides, preventing water intrusion and back-tracking. This is a major advantage in Alaska's long rainy seasons.

  • Can Interlock® handle high winds and storms?

Yes. The 4-way interlocking system creates strong wind uplift resistance and prevents blow-offs far better than nailed shingles.

  • Is Interlock® good for snow loads?

Yes. Interlock sheds snow efficiently, lowering the snow load and reducing ice-dam risk in alpine zones.

  • Is Interlock® good for freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Aluminum expands/contracts without cracking, and the interlocking design stays sealed through Alaska temperature swings.

  • Is Interlock® fire-resistant for wildfire zones?

Yes. Interlock® aluminum shingles are non-combustible and can achieve a Class A fire rating when installed with an approved assembly.

  • Is Interlock® hail-resistant?

Yes. Heavy-gauge aluminum resists impacts without cracking, unlike asphalt; it remains watertight after hail.

  • Is Interlock® good for coastal wind + salt together?

Yes. Interlock combines rust-resistant aluminum with interlocking wind resistance, making it ideal for Alaska coastal towns.

  • How does Interlock® compare to asphalt shingles?

Interlock® lasts far longer, resists moss, won’t shed granules, and stands up to Alaska weather. Asphalt costs less upfront but usually needs to be replaced every 15–25 years. Interlock is the lifetime value.

  • How does Interlock® compare to architectural shingles?

Architectural shingles look better than 3-tab but still degrade and need replacement. Interlock maintains a premium appearance for decades.

  • How does Interlock® compare to cedar shake?

Interlock Shake adds a cedar-style look without rot, splitting, or fire risk. Cedar needs heavy upkeep in Oregon rain; Interlock doesn’t.

  • How does Interlock® compare to slate?

Interlock Slate mimics slate at a fraction of the weight and cost. Natural slate can crack and requires structural reinforcement.

  • How does Interlock® compare to clay tile?

Interlock Tile gives a Mediterranean look without a heavy structural load. Clay tile can break and is very heavy for seismic zones.

  • How does Interlock® compare to concrete tile?

Interlock Tile is lighter and impact-resistant, with no cracking or mortar maintenance.

  • How does Interlock® compare to standing seam panels?

Interlock Standing Seam uses a mechanical-lock system designed for watertightness. It avoids exposed fasteners that can loosen over time.

  • How does Interlock® compare to exposed-fastener metal roofing?

Interlock® is superior for long-term sealing because there are no exposed screws or washers to age and leak.

  • How does Interlock® compare to stone-coated steel?

Interlock aluminum is naturally rust-proof and lighter. Stone-coated steel relies on coatings for corrosion protection.

  • How does Interlock® compare to synthetic/composite roofing?

Interlock stays stable far longer, is fully recyclable, and offers higher fire safety than most composites.

  • Why choose Interlock® instead of “generic metal roofing”?

Many “metal roofs” overlap panels. Interlock® is a true interlocking system with architectural profiles, aluminum base metal, and certified installation.

  • Who installs Interlock® in Oregon?

Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Ltd. is the exclusive certified Interlock installer for Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

  • Can Interlock® be installed over existing shingles?

Often, yes, if there is one sound layer and the decking is healthy. Roof-overs save the tear-off cost and reduce landfill waste.

  • When is a tear-off required before Interlock®?

If the roof has multiple layers, soft decking, rot, or structural issues, we recommend a tear-off for performance and warranty.

  • Can Interlock® be installed on steep roofs?

Yes. Interlock shingles are engineered for standard and steep residential pitches across Oregon.

  • Can Interlock® be installed on low-slope roofs (below 3/12 pitch)?

Interlock® roofing requires a minimum 3/12 roof slope for all profiles to ensure proper water shedding and warranty-compliant performance. If your roof is below 3/12, we’ll review options such as slope modification or alternative Interlock®-approved solutions during your inspection.

  • Does Interlock® need special underlayment?

Interlock uses high-performance underlayments that improve waterproofing and fire rating for Oregon conditions.

  • Can Interlock® be installed year-round in Oregon?

Yes, but scheduling depends on safe dry windows. We plan installs around Oregon rain cycles for the best results.

  • How long does an Interlock® installation take?

Most residential Interlock roofs take a few days, depending on roof size and complexity.

  • Can I DIY Interlock®?

No. Certified crews must install the Interlock Lifetime Roofing System to maintain the Lifetime warranty and system integrity.

  • Is Interlock® loud in heavy rain?

No. Interlock installs over solid decking with underlayment, and attic insulation absorbs sound.

  • Can I walk on Interlock®?

Yes, carefully and only when dry. Interlock shingles are strong enough for maintenance access.

  • Is Interlock® slippery?

Interlock has textured profiles, but any roof can be slippery when wet. Safety practices always apply.

  • How does Interlock® handle falling branches?

Interlock aluminum is impact-resistant and won’t crack like asphalt. Heavy impacts may dent but usually don’t compromise waterproofing.

  • Is Interlock® energy-efficient?

Yes. Interlock Alunar® coating reflects UV and solar heat, improving comfort and reducing summer attic heat.

  • Does Interlock® help winter efficiency?

Yes. A tight Interlock system reduces air/water intrusion, supporting stable indoor temperatures during Alaska winters.

  • Can solar panels go on Interlock®?

Yes. Interlock systems are solar-compatible with approved mounts that preserve water tightness.

  • Is Interlock® environmentally friendly?

Yes. Aluminum is recyclable, and Interlock’s long lifespan reduces landfill waste from repeated re-roofing.

  • Is Interlock® more expensive upfront?

Yes. Interlock costs more initially than asphalt, but the lifetime cost is usually lower due to avoided replacements.

  • Does Interlock® raise home value?

Often yes. Buyers value transferable lifetime roofs and premium curb appeal.

  • Will Interlock® lower insurance premiums?

Many insurers offer discounts for Class A fire systems and impact resistance. Discounts vary by carrier and Alaska market.

  • Is Interlock® worth it if I might sell in 5–10 years?

Often yes. Transferable warranty + premium look can be a major selling advantage.

  • How much maintenance does Interlock® need?

Very little. Basic gutter cleaning and occasional roof checks are enough for most Alaska homes.

  • Will Interlock® fade over time?

Interlock’s Alunar® Coating System is designed for long color stability and UV resistance.

  • Can Interlock® be pressure-washed?

Low-pressure cleaning is fine when needed. Aggressive pressure washing is unnecessary for most owners.

  • Does Interlock® prevent leaks better than shingles?

Yes. The interlocking edges form a continuous barrier that resists wind-driven rain and back-tracking.

  • Which Interlock® profile fits my home best?

Slate fits classic and upscale homes, Cedar Shingle suits craftsman styles, Shake works for rustic cabins, Tile fits Mediterranean designs, and Standing Seam matches modern architecture.

  • Can Interlock® match neighborhood aesthetics?

Yes. Interlock offers multiple profiles and colors that blend with Alaska architectural styles.

  • Does Interlock® add curb appeal?

Yes. Interlock gives high-end texture and shadow-line depth, keeping a premium look for decades.

  • Can Interlock® be used on commercial buildings?

Yes. Interlock profiles, especially Standing Seam, work well on light-commercial, churches, and institutional roofs where longevity matters.
